The war is over and you walk into the first fish market of Zeebrugge. Here, you experience the rich fishing history in word and image: the old fishing songs, pictures, models and videos witness the hard fishing life. In a real-like scenery you can see how the fish was unloaded and sorted in the “bennen”, while the auctioneer keeps an eye on everything.

Zeebrugge and the war

Zeebrugge also suffered during the two wars that set the world on fire. Learn more about it at the exhibitions ‘Besieged Coast, occupied Harbour’ and ‘For Freedom'. Relive the Raid on Zeebrugge during WW I and discover the crucial role the harbour of Zeebrugge played during that battle. Or learn the less known story of the thousands of Canadian forces that crossed the ocean during WW II to help us conquer the Germans. These stories should never be forgotten.

It cannot be denied that Zeebrugge is a harbour city. While entering Zeebrugge, the visitor is immediately confronted with the busy harbour traffic, the enormous cranes and the many container and cargo ships. In the harbour centre, you can experience this interesting theme from close by.

Russian submarine, unique in Belgium

Seafront is especially known for its real Russian submarine. In this steel monster of 100 metres long, you experience how the 75 crew members lived and worked for months in a row. Descend into the hold of this steel monster and discover the hard life on board during the dark days of the Cold War.

Lichtschip West-Hinder

Lightship West-Hinder

After the submarine, you can visit the bright red ‘lighthouse-on-water’, the former lightship West-Hinder. Lightships together with beacons, light buoys and lighthouses are part of the coastal lighting for the shipping traffic. Lightships served navigation and were anchored at a fixed position at sea. They were equipped with a light tower with a powerful light source, a powerful fog signal installation and a radio beacon. Lightships always had a bright red colour.
